Journal of the Month: Cabinet

The Journal of the Month for December/January 2012 is Cabinet, an award-winning quarterly magazine of art and culture…Its hybrid sensibility merges the popular appeal of an arts periodical, the visually engaging style of a design magazine, and the in-depth exploration of a scholarly journal to create a sourcebook of ideas for an eclectic international audience of readers, from artists and designers to scientists, philosophers, and historians.

Issue 43 includes:

“Our Aesthetic Categories: An Interview with Sianne Ngai”—Ngai, professor of English at Stanford University, discusses aesthetics as a philosophical discipline, with a focus on the cute, the interesting, and the zany.

On this month’s theme Forensics:

“Osteobiography: An Interview with Clyde Snow”—Forensic anthropologist Snow discussed his field in terms of the law.

“The Freedom of Speech Itself”—A contemporary chronology of forensic listening.

Journal of the Month: Metalsmith

The Journal of the Month for November is Metalsmith, a trade magazine published by the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG). Metalsmith features critical issues and ideas in the discipline, relavant historical work, as well as current work by featured artists, exhibition reviews, and SNAG news.

Vol. 31, No. 5 Features:

“The Hand as Subject and Site”—The late Polly Ullrich explores ways in which jewelry and the hand interact to create heightened self-awareness and complex experience.

Writer’s Studio Grand Opening

The Writer’s Studio Grand Opening is next Thursday October 20, 2011, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Stahl Hall 113. The opening ceremony will feature a ribbon-cutting followed by a brief collaborative fiction reading by Holly Bittner’s Creative Writing: Fiction class. There will be cake!

The Writer’s Studio is a supportive space where students can go to work with a peer tutor on writing for any course or project. The Studio will also provide opportunities to pursue interests in writing as a creative art through extra-curricular activities, events and publications. In honor of the grand opening Connelly Library has a new display featuring books about writing — stop by to see some of the titles we have available. Journal of the Month: Selvedge

The Journal of the Month for October is Selvedge, a bi-monthly trade magazine from the UK for textiles and fashion. Selvedge offers textile photography, reports on contemporary textile art, profiles on international artists, industry news, book reviews, resources, and exhibition listings.

The current issue features:

“Art Institution—A look at the life and work of Brazilian artist Arthur Bispo do Rosário”

“The Triangle Fire—a look back at the legacy of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire on its 100th anniversary”

Welcome Elizabeth to the Library!

Please join us in welcoming Elizabeth M. Kenny to our library staff as Graduate Research Assistant. She received her Bachelors of Arts in English Literature from LaSalle University, and a Masters of Library Science from Drexel University.

Elizabeth has previously worked at the Metanexus Institute, a non-profit that promotes networking and exploration in the international academic community. As grant administrator at the Institute she has proven abilities to communicate with people from different cultures, backgrounds and educational levels. She also has and continues to volunteer at the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Charles Santore Branch.

Welcome Liz!

We are pleased to announce that Liz Carter has joined our library staff as Senior Library Assistant. Liz graduated from Drexel University with a Master of Library and Information Science and received her Bachelor of Arts from Bryn Mawr College in History of Art, with a minor in French. She also studied in Paris at the Pantheon-Sorbonne’s Institut d’Art et d’Archéologie. Perusing her interest in printmaking, she has taken classes at PAFA and Penland School of Crafts.

Liz has previously worked at Bryn Mawr College’s Canaday Library, and interned at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Library.

So-En Magazine

The Journal of the Month and the newest addition to the library’s periodicals collection is So-En. So-En is a monthly Japanese magazine that was started by Bunka Fukusou Gakuin (Bunka Fashion College) in 1936 as the country’s very first fashion magazine.

The magazine is known for its excellent features on exciting new trends, coverage of Japan’s top fashion districts Harajuku, Aoyama and Daikanyama, as well as showcasing Japanese and international fashion designers.
