Win a book on the work of the country’s first modern artist!

Thomas Chambers

Relatively little is known about Thomas Chambers, a 19th Century artist who was the subject of a recent exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Chambers was an English-born artist who is today renowned for his expressive landscape and marine paintings. According to the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s 2008 exhibition catalog (the book you can win!), Chambers was “a self-taught artist who operated in the zone between folk and fine art [and] was this country’s first modern artist.”

Answer the question below and win “Thomas Chambers: American Marine and Landscape Painter, 1808-1869”, published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art! Click the cover to learn more about this publication.

Question: What is the name of the work on the book’s cover (see picture above), and what repository is it from? Hint: use one of the library’s image databases.

Reply in the comments or send an email to [library at] with your answer, and good luck!

We have a winner! Theresa Asbury correctly answered that the name of the work is “Boston Harbor,” from the Whitney’s collection. In case you were wondering, the answer could be found in ARTstor. Check back for another contest soon!
