Support One Book, One Philadelphia!

Welcome back — We hope you had a restful Winter Break!

BuddhaInTheAttic

To start of the Spring Semester, the library is supporting the 2013 One Book, One Philadelphia selection: The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka.

Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award For Fiction and a National Book Award Finalist, Otsuka’s The Buddha in the Attic tells the story of a group of young women brought from Japan to San Francisco as “picture brides” nearly a century ago. The novel traces their collective and individual experiences as wives, mothers, breadwinners, and marginalized members of American society during both peacetime and the onset of World War II. It is a spellbinding read about identity and loyalty, and what it means to be an American in uncertain times.

After reading the novel, be sure to contribute to our interactive wall art outside the Library’s entrance!

Some date back as far as the mid-1800s through present day. The artists are largely alumni or faculty of Moore College. The selections you see above are ca. 1920, painted by members of the Philadelphia 10, a prominent group of woman artists who worked and exhibited together regularly. #artschool #librariesofinstagram #philadelphia #womenartists #oilpaintings
