Journal of the Month and Spring Break

WomenintheArtsIn celebration of Women’s History Month, the Journal of the Month for March 2013 is Women in the Arts.

Women in the Arts is published three times a year as a benefit for members of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. The museum brings recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women and by teaching the public about their accomplishments.

Volume 31, no. 1 features:

“A World Apart: Anna Ancher and the Skagen Art Colony”—Innovative painter Anna Ancher (1859-1935) was an integral part of a seaside artists’ community at Skagen, in northern Denmark. Her landscapes, interiors, and portraits are remarkable for their light-filled Impressionist technique and their anticipation of the twentieth century.

“Freya Grand: Minding the Landscape”—Grand’s landscapes express a profound connection with the earth, evoking the exhilaration, wonder, and serenity she experiences when traveling to remote sites.

“Exploring the Archives”—NMWA’s Archives of Women Artists contains the papers of artist Edna Reindel, who created iconic paintings of WWII-era women at work.

Be sure to browse this month’s journal, along with the rest of our collection!

Also, as a reminder, the Library is open regular hours over Spring Break. If you are in town and feel like getting ahead (or caught up), please come in.

We hope you have a restful week off!

Some date back as far as the mid-1800s through present day. The artists are largely alumni or faculty of Moore College. The selections you see above are ca. 1920, painted by members of the Philadelphia 10, a prominent group of woman artists who worked and exhibited together regularly. #artschool #librariesofinstagram #philadelphia #womenartists #oilpaintings
